What We Do

Linda in her home

At the heart of L'Arche is the support we provide to people with learning disabilities in our communities. Through our nine communities in the UK we offer a range of high quality, person centred residential support to over 150 adults with a learning disability. Some people are supported in their own homes for a few hours per week whereas others are supported twenty four hours a day in our supported living services or registered care services. Support is provided by highly motivated assistants who have chosen to share life with people with learning disabilities in our houses or live close to them.

All of our houses provide good quality accommodation for people and where appropriate they are adapted to the needs of the people supported. They are places where people experience a real sense of being at home.

Some of our communities also provide day opportunities for people with learning disabilities which encourage their creative skills and talents.

L'Arche communities are vibrant places of welcome, belonging and celebration with a clear commitment to offer people with learning disabilities the opportunities to lead fulfilling lives regardless of their disability. We support people with learning disabilities to be as involved as far as possible in all aspects of their lives including

- Developing skills

- Domestic tasks

- Faith development

- Personal care

- Community activities

- Leisure

- Voluntary work

- Employment

- Healthcare needs

Due to the way our communities are structured we are able to offer high levels of support to people with learning disabilities which ensure a real and natural commitment to person centredness.

Partnership and Collaboration

Partnership and collaboration with others is vital to the success of L’Arche’s mission. The families of the people we support are important partners with us in ensuring that all our support is centred on the wishes, needs and dreams of people. They are valued and encouraged to be involved in the life of the community and to contribute in whatever way possible. Our communities are also supported by many volunteers who freely offer their gifts and commitment to enhance the vision of our communities.

L'Arche also has a long history of working cooperatively with social service and social work departments, health authorities, primary care trusts, registration and regulatory authorities, housing associations and others to provide good quality support that are recognized as being truly responsive to people with learning disabilities.
